About BAPHR

The Bay Area Physicians for Human Rights is the world's first organization of gay physicians.  We are dedicated to improving health care in our community and nurturing the careers of LGBTQ medical professionals.

Our members are a diverse group of physicians, dentists and allied healthcare specialists in different stages of their career.  We work at academic institutions, in small group practices as well as in larger managed care organizations.

Many of our members are attracted to BAPHR by our monthly social mixers.  These events are held at different venues in San Francisco and are a chance to meet friends and network in an informal setting.

We hold a special program in June each year honoring the historical role of BAPHR during the AIDS crisis.  Our organization played a critical role providing education, prevention and direct patient care services during that challenging time.

Our organization sponsors grants to community medical not-for-profit organizations on a semi-annual cycle.  We also organize a mentorship program pairing medical trainees with BAPHR members.

BAPHR was founded in 1977 and registered as a 503(c)(3) not-for-profit organization in 1979.
